What an interesting and successful year 2012 was for PP4Alz! After settling into our new community in South Florida (where there is the highest concentration of elderly citizens, as well as Alzheimer's patients), we were able to make strides in raising awareness and funds in our fight against Alzheimer's.
First, Cynthia worked hard to become known in the community by volunteering with other organizations, beginning at the Susan G Komen for the Cure South Florida Race Day in West Palm Beach, Florida in January. That event proved to be successful (not just for meeting Hoda Kotb from NBC's The Today Show), but Cynthia began to build a network within the community.
Building on that event, Cynthia also volunteered at the Actors Walk, MDA Muscle Walk, and Thin Mint Race. Our visit to the Heart Ball in Palm Beach was a very enjoyable evening, culminating with Cynthia being kissed by The Donald himself! Finally, we were invited to speak at the Rotary Club of Palm Beach during one of their lunches.
2012 also saw us volunteer at Chelsea Meadows, a senior center specific to providing care to those patients with dementia. Between being guests at the Sweetheart Lunch and serving residents during a cookout recognising National Nursing Home, we were able to bring smiles to those suffereing from Alzheimer's, as well as bring smiles to us.
Our fundraising events included the Birdies for Children program at the Honda Classic at PGA National Spa and Resort, Spa After Dark Silent Auction (with Kristin Esper, Spa Sales Manager), and Alex and Ani's Charity by Design. We would like to hearfully thank those organizations that provided us with an opportunity to raise awareness and funds, as well as to those individuals who donated goods and services for the cause.
2012 ended with PP4Alz making our initial contribution to The Fisher Center for Alzheimer's Research Foundation, in the amount of $500. We are hopeful that all of our efforts in 2012 will lead to more contributions in 2013.
Happy New Year to all of our friends, family, and supporters. We look forward to bringing you more news in the fight against Alzheimer's.

After three years of building our fund and getting our name into our communities, we are so excited to announce that we have made our initial donation to the Fisher Center for Alzheimer's Research Foundation, in the amount of $500. We believe that the Fisher Center for Alzheimer's Research, led by Nobel Laureate Dr. Paul Greengard, is a leader in finding a cure for this awful disease.
As the Fisher Center recently wrote to us, "The Fisher Center for Alzheimer's Disease Research team ... has begun to identify ways to inhibit gamma secretase activitiy indirectly so that only the production of beta amyloid would be affect, not other life processes. These studies, supported by the many significant findings (the Center has) recently had, should lead to the identification of novel proteins that regulate the activity of gamma secretase, thus providing a safer target for ingibiting the production of beta amyloid. Such proteins would represent novel targets for treating Alzheimer's disease.
Through the efforts of such outstanding research organizations, we are confident that a cure, and prevention, can be found in the near future. This news is so encouraging, we MUST continue our fight against this disease; we are confident that our efforts of getting into the community to raise awareness will lead to future opportunities to raise funds for The Fisher Center.

We had a fabulous time at Alex and Ani's on Worth Avenue in Palm Beach this past Monday, as they hosted Charity by Design to raise funds for PURPLE PASSION 4 Alzheimer's. Carrie Johnson, Store Manager, and her staff were gracious hostesses for this event. Customers were given the opportunity to shop at the jewelry store, as well as speak with Cynthia and Joe and learn more about Alzheimer's and our fight against the disease. A portion of the proceeds from the sales were then donated to PP4Alz.
